The University of Alabama

Crossroads Community Center

Open Mic, Open Heart

Open Mic, Open Heart is an open mic-style forum which aims to provide an uninhibited and respectful environment in which all members of the University of Alabama community, both students and faculty, would be able to introduce, discuss, and begin solving intercultural community issues. These issues can include anything from race relations to faculty/student relations, to hate speech and discrimination on campus.

In addition, the forum seeks to recognize those persons or organizations who have demonstrated marked efforts toward building a more coherent community. These individuals are inducted into the Crossroads Community Center Honors Circle.

The first of these forums was held on February 27, 2007. The evening's program honored students Nelda Sanker and Nadia Caesar-Richardson, for their work in creating the Intercultural Student Council, and Candace Portis, for her work on behalf of the Save Foster Auditorium Initiative. Additionally, the forum recognized NAACP, Omega Psi Phi, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon for their collaboration on the annual Toy Ball.

All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to join this pro-active attempt to foster understanding within the University of Alabama. Issues can be submitted in advance to the Crossroads Community Center, or simply presented on the night of the event.
